Alex is an ecologist and educator with more than 15 years of experience. He completed a B.A. at UC Santa Cruz and an M.S. at Antioch University New England. For his master’s thesis, Alex studied the status and restoration potential of local populations of the New England cottontail, a candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. Since joining Colibri in 2011, Alex has performed pre-activity surveys and biological monitoring for projects in habitat for special-status species such as limestone salamander, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, and burrowing owl. Alex is also Campus Natural Reserve Manager at UC Santa Cruz, where he supports education, research, and stewardship activities on campus natural lands. In his spare time, Alex plays guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, and washboard and explores forests, fields, and shores with his wife and baby boy.
